ArtScience Museum: Into the Wild

Into the Wild is a mixed reality adventure that transforms Singapore’s ArtScience Museum into a virtual rainforest. The experience combines Tango and AR technologies to let visitors see the effects of deforestation by physically exploring the virtual exhibition.

Using computer vision, the app tracks motion and understands depth and distance travelled inside the museum-turned-rainforest. The rainforest is inhabited by endangered animals people can interact with to learn about the threats imposed by human impact. The experience becomes a reality when the virtual tree that people can plant symbolically becomes a real tree, donated to WFF by the project’s sponsors.

Creating a digital Jungle

For this project we had to create a 10.000ft digital jungle that would run on a Lenovo Google Tango Device. While the device was way ahead of its time and could already track 3d space we still had limited texture and polygon counts to make an environment in this size. We embraced a low-poly look with vertex colors and added a lot of atmospheric effect to give this jungle it's final look. The environment was designed directly in 3d and for the animals I first made some concept art as guide for the 3d team.
